  1. Italian family of sculptors and architects,
  2. active in Florence. Luca della Robbia
  3. (1400-82) created a number of major works in
  4. Florence, notably the marble cantoria
  5. (singing gallery) in the cathedral 1431-38
  6. (Museo del Duomo), with lively groups of
  7. choristers. Luca also developed a
  8. characteristic style of glazed terracotta
  9. work. Andrea della Robbia (1435-1525), Luca's
  10. nephew and pupil, and Andrea's sons continued
  11. the family business, inheriting the formula
  12. for the vitreous terracotta glaze. The blue
  13. and white medallions of foundling children
  14. 1463-66 on the Ospedale degli Innocenti,
  15. Florence, are typical. Many later works are
  16. more elaborate and highly coloured, such as
  17. the frieze 1522 on the facade of the Ospedale
  18. del Ceppo, Pistoia.
